Dan Papajcik


Dan Papajcik is an experienced and uniquely talented professional with a rich and diverse portfolio of work in law, academics and the employee benefit industry. He has served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, a felony prosecutor/labor attorney, associate adjunct professor, chief financial officer, insurance account executive and innovative entrepreneur.

For the past 15 years Dan has worked in the insurance industry, focused on achieving client goals through strategic benefit design and client advocacy. He is known for his innovative approach to the ways employees access and employers deliver valuable benefits.

Dan is a Principal and co-founder of Vertus. Under his leadership, the company has become a multi-state practice with a compound annual growth rate of 40+ percent. He directs the financial, regulatory, and legal operations across the practice and his partnerships with insurance carriers have led to strategic changes in the delivery of employee benefits. Dan also works directly with large employers and insurance carriers, focusing on employee benefits across the medical, non-medical, and voluntary space.

Prior to joining Vertus, Dan served as an Account Executive at one of the nation’s largest insurance carriers, MetLife. He was responsible for developing and achieving benefit solutions for large (Fortune 500) and mid-market employers throughout the U.S. While at MetLife, Dan managed a $36 million book of business with over 60 client accounts and provided insurance or insurance alternatives to over 109,000 lives.

Previously, Dan served as Chief Financial Officer and co-founder of a start-up dental consulting firm focused on increasing access for dental patients, with consumer-driven benefits for employers. He was responsible for operations including the development of mobile dentistry options for delivery of care to challenging-to-serve populations, such as nursing homes and remote employers.

As a Judge Advocate, in the U.S. Army at multiple locations across the country, Dan served as Chief of Legal Assistance, Contract Attorney Advisor, Trial Counsel, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney. In his last assignment, he was a Labor and Employment Attorney, advising senior leaders on strategic personnel decisions and representing the US Army at key decision making authorities, including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB).

Dan is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional and is licensed to practice law in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. He earned his law degree at The Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law, where he graduated with honors in the top 25 percent of his class. Dan graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washington University in St. Louis in the College of Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the John M. Olin School of Business.

In 2013, NASA Employee Benefit Association (NEBA) designated Dan as the recipient of the Robert E. Fails Award for excellent service to NASA based on his contributions to the NEBA benefit program designed to specifically support NASA employees and spaceflight personnel. In the 65+ year history of NEBA, this was the first time that the Board of Directors granted this award to an individual outside of the Agency. In addition, Dan serves as a Trustee to the Ann Arbor chapter of The Awesome Foundation, which through micro-grants, supports initiatives in a wide range of areas including arts, technology, community development, and more.

Dan lives with his wife and three young children in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
