This white paper discusses a number of factors to take into account when considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on employer-sponsored benefit plans. These include certain direct costs of COVID-19: the cost of testing, the cost of care for patients, and the cost of COVID-19 vaccinations. Beyond direct costs, the pandemic has also significantly affected the overall delivery of healthcare, causing many non-emergency procedures and routine office visits to be deferred or cancelled. Also considered will be the certain potential long-term implications of COVID-19 for the healthcare system. Finally, the paper will construct an illustration of how these various factors may interrelate.
